Faster and knowing more vs. deeper and more focused — what’s your choice?
Am I the only one who feels like I’m falling behind in knowledge trends?
Speeding up and learning more is one option…
but is there really no other choice?
Power first appears as a tool for truth and justice. Over time, it turns into something to be maintained and expanded. The problem is not weak will, but the environment power creates. Feedback becomes distorted, dissent diminishes, and repeated success reinforces the belief that one’s judgment is right. Even with good intentions, the very standards of judgment begin to shift.
What is especially dangerous is the experience of “moving reality with a single word.” The ability to settle complex matters instantly is intoxicating. From that moment, the slow, demanding work of uncovering truth is pushed aside as inefficient, and the capacity to produce quick results becomes a virtue. Speed replaces judgment, and judgment grows simpler.
This simplification inevitably leads to delegation. Since no one can handle everything directly, thinking itself is outsourced, and contact with reality weakens. Reports are filtered; inconvenient facts don’t surface. What remains is a summarized world. Complexity is reduced to simple narratives, and thought tilts toward binaries. The question shifts from “What is true?” to “Who is on our side?”
In the end, the corruption of power is not primarily a moral failure but an epistemic one. The moment we lose the ability to see the world as it is, judgment has already collapsed.
This structure reappears—faster—in the age of AI.
Knowledge has exploded and become instantly accessible. What once took time to accumulate now arrives in seconds. Knowledge is no longer something to explore; it is treated as an immediately usable asset. That is where the problem begins.
AI delivers answers that are fast, fluent, and definitive. The process is hidden; only the result is presented. This form creates the illusion of something “already verified.” When a user’s confidence is added, information turns into authority. Knowledge is no longer shared; it is wielded.
Two patterns emerge simultaneously.
One is the drive to leverage knowledge for immediate gain. Because one can use it without deep understanding, the motivation to explore diminishes. Knowledge becomes not a process of questioning and revision, but a tool for instant consumption.
The other is the ridicule of ignorance. Admitting not knowing is treated as incompetence, and asking questions becomes risky. When questions disappear, the starting point of inquiry disappears with them, leaving only the consumption of conclusions. At the same time, those who ridicule others avoid confronting their own shallowness. Labeling others becomes a defense that hides one’s own limits.
These two patterns reinforce each other. Skipping inquiry enables speed; ridicule legitimizes the skipping. As a result, deep knowledge appears inefficient, while quick conclusions appear competent.
At this point, we must ask what “quality” in knowledge really means.
Quality is not just accuracy. It includes the question from which knowledge arises, the process it goes through, the limits it recognizes, and how honestly it faces reality. AI can increase the accuracy of results, but it cannot supply these other elements.
What matters, then, is not knowing more, but deciding what to discard and what to slow down.
Knowledge operates differently over time.
Some knowledge decays quickly—trends, current events, technical specs. It is useful for immediate response, but quickly becomes obsolete. Some knowledge is bound to context—economic principles of a given era, expertise within a specific technological paradigm. It endures for decades but collapses when the paradigm shifts. And some knowledge hardly changes at all—human desires, the nature of power, the tension between individual and community. These persist across centuries.
What is striking is that AI excels at handling fast-decaying knowledge, yet is weakest at the enduring layer. Data can describe phenomena, but it cannot replace the standards by which we interpret them—the deeper principles.
The problem arises when we treat all these layers the same—when we take short-lived knowledge as timeless truth, or consume enduring knowledge as if it were a trend.
Ultimately, the essence of knowledge lies not in its content, but in knowing
which layer it belongs to, and when it should be discarded.
All of this leads to a single question.
Truth is vast and deep, and therefore slow. Human life is finite. We cannot explore everything, so what we choose matters. This choice is not a loss, but an honest recognition of our limits—and it reveals how we choose to live.
Necessity defines scope; curiosity creates depth. When they do not overlap, we must choose. There is no single right answer, but those choices accumulate into a life.
The task in the age of AI is not to know more.
It is to decide what to examine, what to pass over, and what to leave unknown.
In the end, what remains is simple:
We can know more than ever before,
but we must choose what not to know.
