In the end, maybe the real key isn’t changing the world, but making the effort to change ourselves.

People often want to simplify the world. They believe that if they live kindly, good things will happen; if they act with good intentions, gratitude will return; and if they avoid harming others, they will at least live without major problems. In reality, that belief is also an important force that motivates people to begin something. But the world is far more complex than it appears, resting on countless external variables and layers of noise.

It is not unusual for something started with good intentions to unfold in a completely unexpected direction. When people donate, share freely, or release their knowledge openly, they expect mostly positive reactions. Yet reality generates entirely different responses as well. Offer something for free, and some people demand even more. Share technology openly, and there will be people who criticize it aggressively while demanding unreasonable support and maintenance. When I once gave away free cup noodles, some people even brought carts to carry away as much as possible. When I released my technology as open source, there were people who attacked the work itself and demanded customer service as if they had paid for a premium product. The world does not respond to goodwill in a single uniform way.

The reason is simple: people have all lived completely different lives. Some see kindness and feel gratitude. Others see the same act as something they are entitled to. Some are moved by help, while others project their own desires and frustrations onto the situation. There are truly all kinds of people in the world, and even when facing the exact same event, each person interprets it through entirely different experiences and standards. That is why reactions to any action are never consistent.

The difficult part is that when people begin something, they rarely focus on those negative possibilities. If they only expected criticism and hostility from the start, most efforts would never begin at all. Human beings ultimately move forward through positive energy. “Maybe this will help someone,” “Perhaps sharing my experience could be useful,” or “I just want to contribute a little within what I can afford to handle.” Those are the kinds of thoughts that start things. Yet reality’s noise shakes those expectations, and many people eventually become exhausted and give up. Perhaps that is why those who continue creating and contributing for a long time appear unusual. Not simply because they have strong willpower, but because they have gradually accepted the structure of the world’s reactions themselves.

What is interesting is that negative reactions are not the only burden. Excessively positive and overly eager reactions can become burdens as well. Once you help people, there are times when you unintentionally inherit their expectations and dependency. Even gratitude can slowly transform into endless requests for continued support and responsibility. In the end, sustainability matters more than endless generosity. What matters is not giving infinitely, but acting in a way that does not destroy yourself in the process. I was never wealthy, nor did I want to become some kind of hero. It was enough for me to help someone a little within a level of burden I could realistically carry.

Perhaps that is also why I stopped reacting too heavily to YouTube comments. At first glance, comments appear to be simple exchanges of opinion, but in reality they are spaces where people’s insecurities, desires for recognition, aggression, expectations, and frustrations all mix together. Some people become excessively hostile, while others become excessively attached. Some try to control the direction of your work. Completely contradictory demands can exist under the same video at the same time. Once you emotionally attach yourself to every reaction, your own center begins to blur, and external noise starts controlling your direction. That does not mean ignoring all feedback entirely, but it does mean refusing to let it become the absolute force that defines your path.

At a deeper level, words and sentences alone rarely change people’s actions or values. Human beings are shaped through long years of experience and environment, so a few sentences or logical arguments rarely transform someone completely. That is why so many online arguments become endless parallel lines. People are often less interested in understanding others than in reinforcing what they already believe. Even being deeply moved by powerful words can itself become dangerous. When people are persuaded without real experience, they accumulate what could be called “experience debt.” They feel as if they understand something intellectually, but reality has not yet validated that understanding. Eventually, reality collides with those borrowed convictions, and the cost must be paid later.

In the end, the world is far more like a jungle than people wish to admit. Human beings can change quickly over small gains and losses, and society constantly shakes at people’s weakest links. A single phishing call can destroy someone’s life because it targets anxiety, urgency, fear, and vulnerability. Scammers and predators rarely attack directly; instead, they look for moments when people are psychologically weak. More frightening still is the fact that some dangers cannot be completely avoided no matter how careful you are. People are sometimes attacked on the street by strangers they have never met. Lives can be threatened by fires started by someone else’s resentment toward society. The simple idea that “everything will be fine if I just do my part well” collapses because the world contains countless external variables beyond individual control, including variables we do not even recognize.

Yet falling into total nihilism is another trap. The world is imperfect, unpredictable, and not governed by goodwill alone. But if all that remains is cynicism and surrender, life itself gradually becomes hollow. Perhaps that is why human beings continue living as though planting an apple tree even if the world were ending tomorrow. Not because the world is perfect, and not because outcomes are fully controllable. Rather, because even while understanding uncertainty, danger, noise, and absurdity, people still continue small actions within what they can personally sustain. Not necessarily because those actions will save the world, but because continuing them may be what keeps them from collapsing themselves.
