Observing Challenger Parrot Claw, I Reflect on the Space Between Expectation and Caution.

There are moments when we begin something believing it will unfold exactly as we imagined, only to find ourselves standing before a completely different outcome later on. In those moments, people usually question the execution first. Was I lacking ability? Did I choose the wrong direction? Was I simply unlucky? But when you look back carefully, the problem may not have been the outcome itself, but the materials that were used to build the expectation in the first place.

Watching a parrot gives me that strange feeling sometimes. When a new toy is placed nearby, even if it looks almost identical to one it already plays with, it does not approach immediately. It stiffens slightly and stares from a distance for a long time. Its eyes keep moving, and its tense feathers puff up ever so slightly. If the toy is pushed too close, it steps back or flies away somewhere else. As if it were saying, “I haven’t finished deciding yet.”

After some time, it slowly approaches. It taps the object lightly with the tip of its beak, and if nothing happens, it rubs against it again. One confirmation is never enough. Even after turning away, it comes back to peck at it again, to touch it again. It repeats the same actions over and over, never lowering its guard too easily. Then, at some point, its own scent and traces begin to settle onto the object, and only then does it slowly allow the toy into its world. It feels as though trust is not something formed in a single moment, but a sensation that enters the body only after repeated confirmation.

Humans, on the other hand, often skip that process too quickly. The moment something looks appealing, we bring it into ourselves before fully testing it. Someone else’s success story, a trending method, narratives repeated over and over. Before truly examining whether they fit us, what assumptions they are built upon, or what has been left out, we begin constructing expectations around them. And those expectations, while appearing solid on the surface, are often built upon materials that were never properly verified.

So when reality collides with those expectations, people are shocked by the outcome itself. But perhaps the more important thing to ask first is this: what was it that I believed in from the very beginning? Were those expectations something I accepted only after testing them repeatedly through my own senses, or were they brought inside too quickly in a state of impatience?

After a long period of caution, the parrot eventually sits quietly beside the toy. And without pushing it away anymore, it slowly rests its beak upon it.
