The League Survival Game — Why Getting Eliminated Matters More Than Hitting Home Runs
People talk about success in terms of home runs. They talk about how much money someone makes, what kind of house they live in, what car they drive, and how famous they have become. But if you observe life long enough, a different question begins to emerge. The harder question is not how someone became successful, but how they managed to stay in the game.
When we are young, it feels as though effort can solve everything. We believe that if we develop our skills, work hard, and avoid harming others, things will work out. As time passes, however, we discover a difficult truth: there are problems that cannot be solved by competence or diligence alone.
Illness in the family, accidents, fraud, phishing scams, ransomware attacks, hacking, lawsuits, unethical orders, political violence, misinformation, deepfakes, and stalking. None of these can be completely prevented simply because we are responsible or hardworking. Many of life's greatest hardships do not arise from our own mistakes, but from the choices and actions of others that unexpectedly affect us.
Many people confidently say they would never fall for a phishing scam. They believe they could never be hacked or deceived. Yet real-world examples show doctors, lawyers, professors, executives, and software developers becoming victims. It is not because they are foolish. It is because human judgment is shaped by circumstances.
A scam that seems obvious on an ordinary day can become convincing when a loved one is in the emergency room, when someone claims your bank account is connected to a crime, when your career is on the line, or when the safety of your family is threatened. The issue is not ignorance. The issue is that every human being has limits.
The same principle applies online. Many people still treat the internet as if it were separate from reality, but it is simply another part of reality itself. A stranger can hack your account, manipulate your voice with AI, edit chat logs, spread false accusations, or damage your reputation. Victims and perpetrators often have never met. Random attacks are not limited to the physical world; they exist online as well.
Fame follows a similar pattern. Many people dream of becoming well-known, but visibility creates new vulnerabilities. The more famous you become, the more likely you are to face threats, demands for donations, invasions of privacy, malicious rumors, and coordinated harassment. Some people will admire your success. Others will envy it. Some will exploit your name simply to gain attention or profit for themselves.
Success expands opportunities, but it also expands your attack surface. The old saying, "People become jealous when others prosper," existed long before the internet. Today, that same emotion can be amplified by hundreds of thousands of people simultaneously.
This is why good deeds are not always received positively. Donate to a worthy cause, and someone will accuse you of image laundering. Stay silent, and someone else will accuse you of selfishness. Announce your donation, and people call it publicity. Remain anonymous, and people question whether you donated at all. Even acts of kindness become subject to interpretation, suspicion, and political framing.
People are not always rational in their judgments. Historical tragedies that have already been extensively documented and evaluated can still become targets of ridicule, distortion, or denial. Individuals with no personal connection to the victims may participate in mockery or misinformation simply for entertainment, ideological loyalty, or group identity. Yet the fact that others are doing it does not make it right.
Many people hide behind the phrase, "Everyone else was doing it." But over time, society forgets what everyone else did and remembers what each individual chose to do. History, law, and public memory ultimately record personal choices.
What makes life even more complicated is that a decision that seems reasonable at the time can later be viewed as a terrible mistake. A choice made to protect an organization can become a criminal act. Following orders can turn someone into a participant in wrongdoing. Complying with authority can leave a person carrying a lifelong burden of explanation and regret.
At the time, those decisions may genuinely appear to be the best available options. Family may be at risk. Employment may be threatened. Exclusion or retaliation may seem inevitable. Yet what appears necessary is not always what is right. Under pressure, people cross lines they never expected to cross, only realizing the consequences afterward.
The reality is that most people do not have the luxury to think deeply about these risks. Survival comes first. Rent must be paid. Food must be purchased. Bills must be covered. Long-term dangers are often overshadowed by immediate necessities. This is not ignorance; it is the reality of daily life.
That is why life is often less fair than we would like to believe. Some people fail because of poor decisions. Others fail despite making good decisions. Some avoid danger through luck. Others encounter disaster through no fault of their own. Success and failure cannot be explained by skill alone.
Principles and habits certainly matter. Writing contracts, maintaining backups, keeping emergency savings, avoiding suspicious links, and refusing to make important decisions while angry all reduce risk significantly. Yet even with all those precautions, misfortune still finds its way through the cracks.
Experienced people eventually stop pursuing perfect safety. Instead, they focus on building resilience. Backups are not primarily about preventing hacks; they are about recovering afterward. Insurance is not designed to prevent accidents; it is designed to help people endure them. Cash reserves are not merely for spending; they protect future choices and opportunities.
The goal of life is not to avoid failure forever. The goal is to remain capable of standing up again after failure occurs. No shield is indestructible. The best we can do is build one that does not shatter when it takes a hit.
Life is not a home run contest. It is closer to a long season in which the real challenge is avoiding elimination and staying in the league long enough to play another game. And perhaps the true winners are not those who hit the most home runs, but those who endure countless risks, temptations, setbacks, and uncertainties—and still remain standing when the season is over.
