The Age of the Attention Economy — Money, Dopamine, and the Cost of Truth

People often speak of justice and truth. Yet the longer we observe reality, the more we discover that human beings are often more responsive to rewards than justice, and more drawn to a sense of gratification than to truth itself. This pattern can be seen everywhere: on YouTube, in broadcasting, in politics, in journalism, in business, and even in everyday life.

Some say, "If you don't make noise, nobody notices you." It may sound cynical, but it is not entirely wrong. Society tends to discover those who stand out before those who quietly contribute. People who generate attention are often consumed more eagerly than those who create value, and those who are discovered first frequently receive opportunities before those who may be equally capable.

Yet there is another illusion at work. The most visible people are not necessarily the most talented, nor are the least visible necessarily less capable. More often, visibility is the result of being discovered first among many individuals of similar ability. Skill and effort certainly matter, but so does luck. Not luck in a mystical sense, but luck as unpredictable opportunity: shifts in platforms, changes in public sentiment, chance encounters, unexpected exposure, or the mistakes of competitors. People see the strategy behind success but rarely the luck behind it. Likewise, they see the mistakes behind failure but rarely the misfortune that accompanied it. As a result, outcomes are constantly mistaken for explanations.

The story changes the moment attention becomes a reward. Views become money. Subscribers become influence. Influence becomes power. And power often finds its way back into money. In that sense, money, power, reputation, and attention are merely different forms of the same asset. Some pursue wealth, others seek fame, and still others chase influence. Yet all are participating in a similar system: acting in pursuit of something they value.

This is where dopamine enters the picture. At first, small victories feel meaningful. A thousand views, ten likes, or a modest income can bring genuine satisfaction. But humans adapt. What once felt extraordinary soon becomes normal, and greater rewards are required to produce the same feeling. A thousand views become ten thousand. Ten thousand become a hundred thousand. Eventually, even a million views can feel routine. Dopamine creates tolerance, and tolerance demands stronger stimulation.

Comedy follows the same pattern. It may begin with harmless jokes, evolve into self-deprecating humor, and eventually become humor at someone else's expense. At some point, rudeness grows larger than the joke itself, and comedy turns into attack. Politics follows a similar trajectory. Criticism becomes negativity, negativity becomes conspiracy, and eventually outrage becomes more important than facts. YouTube is no different. Content creators begin by making content, then start making views, and eventually find themselves manufacturing stimulation.

The age of AI accelerates this process even further. In the past, deception required effort and expense. Manipulating photos, editing recordings, or fabricating evidence took time and resources. Today, fake images, fake voices, fake videos, fake witnesses, and fabricated conversations can be produced at a fraction of the cost. The problem is not merely the technology itself, but the fact that people consume shock before they consume truth. Corrections go unread. Rebuttals go unheard. Apologies attract little attention. The accusation is remembered; the correction is forgotten.

The result is a form of violence without physical contact. A person can be attacked by a headline, destroyed by a video, or treated as guilty based solely on suspicion. Even when later proven innocent, the damage is often already done. Reputations collapse, relationships break, health deteriorates, and families suffer. By then, public attention has already moved on to the next story. Scandals generate revenue; recovery does not. People consume the event but rarely care about the aftermath.

The corporate world is not much different. Collusion, corruption, intellectual property theft, and counterfeit products often emerge for a simple reason: they appear more profitable than fair competition. The motivation may be money, market share, or power, but the underlying calculation remains the same. When the perceived benefits outweigh the perceived risks, people begin crossing lines.

This is why people frequently speak of principles and justice while acting according to incentives. As long as there is little cost, many remain indifferent. But when revenue falls, advertisers leave, stock prices decline, or public support weakens, attitudes suddenly change. The phrase "financial therapy" exists for a reason. Economic pressure often succeeds where moral persuasion fails.

Of course, not everyone operates this way. Some people pursue truth despite the cost. Yet truth has a fundamental disadvantage: it is rarely exciting. Truth is slow. It is tedious. It requires gathering evidence, considering counterarguments, and enduring long periods of uncertainty. Suspicion, by contrast, spreads instantly. It generates immediate reactions and immediate gratification. As a result, many people claim to pursue justice, but far fewer are willing to endure the process of verification. Truth is a marathon; suspicion is a sprint. Most people leave the race long before reaching the finish line.

Along the way, some become heroes, some become villains, and some are consumed before any meaningful verification takes place. Then something curious happens. Attention moves on, but reality remains. Broken companies remain. Damaged reputations remain. Destroyed relationships remain. Wounded people remain. Attention is consumed and disappears, but the consequences stay behind in someone's life.

Perhaps the greatest illusion of modern society is not the difference between truth and falsehood. More often, we choose what is interesting before we choose what is factual. And after the facts emerge, we choose what feels satisfying before we ask what those facts actually mean. In this process, facts are consumed while truth is pushed aside. The more often this happens, the larger the market for attention becomes, and the smaller the market for truth grows.

It is not that truth has disappeared.

Truth was slow from the beginning.
