AI 판타지 드라마는 인기지만, 현실은 생각보다 조용하다

AI에 대한 이야기를 하다 보면 종종 온라인과 현실의 온도 차이를 느끼게 된다. SNS를 보면 세상이 이미 AI로 재편된 것처럼 보인다. 누구는 AI 에이전트를 만들고, 누구는 바이브 코딩으로 서비스를 출시하며, 누구는 AI로 하루 만에 영상을 수십 개 만든다고 이야기한다. 타임라인을 보다 보면 마치 모두가 AI를 적극적으로 활용하고 있는 것처럼 느껴진다.

하지만 현실에서 내가 만난 사람들은 조금 다른 모습이었다.

몇 개월 동안 교수, 학원 원장, 유통업 사장, 중소기업 대표, 코인 관련 사업가 등 다양한 사람들을 만났다. 그들 대부분은 AI가 중요하다는 사실을 알고 있었다. AI라는 단어를 처음 들어보는 사람은 거의 없었다. 오히려 "ChatGPT 써봤다", "AI에게 물어봤다", "AI 영상이 신기하더라" 정도의 이야기는 자연스럽게 나왔다. 거리에서도 가끔 AI라는 단어가 들린다.

하지만 거기까지인 경우가 많았다.

AI 영상 제작을 배우고 싶다는 교수도 있었고, 유튜브 활성화 방법을 궁금해하던 학원 원장도 있었다. 회사 대표들은 AI를 어떻게 써야 하는지 물었고, 어떤 사람은 AI로 뉴스 채널 수백 개를 운영할 수 있다는 이야기에 솔깃해하기도 했다. 나는 AI로 이미지와 영상을 만들고, 글을 쓰고, 코드를 작성하는 사례를 보여주며 직접 해보라고 권했다. 생각보다 어렵지 않고, 한두 번만 경험해 보면 가능성을 금방 이해할 수 있다고 설명했다.

반응은 대체로 비슷했다.

"오, 신기하네요."

그리고 끝이었다.

그들은 AI를 부정하지 않았다. 오히려 흥미를 보였고, 가능성도 인정했다. 하지만 며칠 뒤 다시 만나면 대부분은 원래의 일상으로 돌아가 있었다. 학원 원장은 학생과 학부모를 관리해야 했고, 교수는 강의와 연구를 해야 했으며, 회사 대표는 영업과 인사, 자금 문제를 해결해야 했다. 유통업 사장은 거래처와 재고를 챙겨야 했고, 사업가는 눈앞의 계약과 자금을 고민해야 했다. AI를 배우는 일은 중요할 수 있지만, 그들에게는 더 급한 일들이 있었다.

생각해보면 대부분의 사람은 필요 이상으로 기술을 배우지 않는다. 스마트폰도 전화와 카카오톡, 유튜브가 되면 충분하고, 컴퓨터도 문서 작성과 인터넷 검색이 되면 충분하다. 나에게는 답답할 정도로 느린 컴퓨터도 누군가에게는 아무 문제 없는 기계다. 기술은 삶의 목적이 아니라 수많은 도구 중 하나일 뿐이다.

나는 종종 AI의 편리함을 설명하려고 애쓴다. 좋은 프롬프트를 알려주고, 영상 제작 노하우를 알려주고, 생산성을 높이는 방법을 설명한다. 다만 대부분은 그 자리에서 다시 자신의 삶으로 돌아간다.

흥미로운 점은 그렇게 AI를 적극적으로 사용하지 않는 사람들도 이미 AI의 도움을 받고 있다는 사실이다. 검색 결과, 추천 알고리즘, 사진 보정, 자동 번역, 스팸 필터 같은 기능들은 이미 AI 위에서 작동한다. 사람들은 AI를 사용하고 있으면서도 그것을 AI 사용이라고 인식하지 않는다. 어쩌면 진짜 대중화란 사람들이 AI를 많이 이야기하는 상태가 아니라, AI라는 단어를 의식하지 않게 되는 상태인지도 모른다.

사람들은 생각보다 바쁘다. 온라인에서는 AI가 세상을 바꾸고 있는 것처럼 보이지만, 현실에서는 각자의 문제를 해결하며 하루를 살아간다. 새로운 기술은 언제나 흥미롭지만, 대부분의 사람들에게는 지금 처리해야 할 일이 먼저다.

온라인은 여전히 시끄럽다.

하지만 현실은 생각보다 조용하다.

그리고 어쩌면 대부분의 변화는 원래 그렇게 조용하게 시작되는 것인지도 모른다.

AI Fantasy Is Popular, but Reality Is Surprisingly Quiet

When people talk about AI, I often notice a gap between the online world and reality.

On social media, it looks as if the world has already been transformed by AI. Someone is building AI agents, someone else is launching services through vibe coding, and another person is generating dozens of videos a day with AI. Scroll through your timeline long enough, and it begins to feel as though everyone is actively using AI.

The people I meet in real life tell a different story.

Over the past few months, I have met professors, academy owners, distributors, small business CEOs, and people involved in crypto-related businesses. Almost all of them understood that AI was important. Very few were hearing the term for the first time. Conversations like "I've tried ChatGPT," "I asked AI about it," or "AI-generated videos are fascinating" came up naturally. I even hear the word "AI" occasionally in everyday conversations on the street.

But in many cases, that is where it ends.

One professor wanted to learn how to create videos with AI. An academy owner was curious about growing a YouTube channel. Company executives asked how AI could be applied to their businesses. Someone else was intrigued by the idea of running hundreds of news channels using AI.

I showed them examples of creating images, videos, articles, and code with AI. I encouraged them to try it themselves. I explained that it was far easier than most people imagined and that a little hands-on experience was often enough to understand its potential.

The reaction was usually the same.

"Wow, that's amazing."

And that was the end of it.

They did not reject AI. They were interested. They recognized its potential. Yet when I met them again a few days later, most had returned to their normal routines.

The academy owner was busy managing students and parents. The professor was focused on lectures and research. The CEO was dealing with sales, hiring, and cash flow. The distributor was handling suppliers and inventory. The entrepreneur was worrying about contracts and financing.

Learning AI might have been important, but they had more urgent problems to solve.

When I think about it, most people do not learn more technology than they actually need. A smartphone only has to make calls, send messages, and play YouTube videos. A computer only has to handle documents and web browsing. A machine that feels unbearably slow to me might seem perfectly acceptable to someone else.

Technology is not the purpose of life. It is simply one of many tools people use.

I often find myself trying to explain the convenience of AI. I share useful prompts, video production techniques, and productivity tricks. Yet most people simply return to their lives once the conversation ends.

What is interesting is that even people who rarely use AI directly are already benefiting from it every day. Search results, recommendation algorithms, photo enhancement, automatic translation, and spam filters all rely on AI. People use AI constantly without recognizing it as AI.

Perhaps true mass adoption is not when people talk about AI all the time, but when they stop noticing it altogether.

People are busier than we often realize. Online, AI appears to be changing the world. In reality, most people are busy solving the problems in front of them and getting through another day. New technologies are always interesting, but for most people, today's responsibilities come first.

The online world is still noisy.

Reality is much quieter.

And perhaps most meaningful changes have always begun that way.
