Interim Report — Parrot Claw Asked: Humans, Why Do You Go This Far?
People often talk about sincerity. Sometimes they wonder about someone's true intentions. Yet these questions are strangely similar to asking, “Who did you vote for?” Even if you receive an answer, it is difficult to verify. If someone refuses to answer, it can seem as though they are hiding something. Sincerity and true intent are much the same. We want to know what is in another person's mind, but in reality, all we can observe are actions and records.
What is even more interesting is that people themselves may not fully understand their own intentions. Human beings perform countless roles throughout their lives. Employees, parents, children, friends, politicians, entrepreneurs—each situation calls for a different persona. Over time, however, it becomes difficult to distinguish between who we truly are and the roles society expects us to play. Demanding proof of sincerity can sometimes become a demand to explain an inner reality that even the individual cannot clearly define.
This is why sincerity is such a difficult concept to verify. In the end, all we can examine are actions and records. Repeated choices and patterns of behavior over long periods allow us to make reasonable inferences, but they do not reveal the essence itself. We can only estimate from the traces left behind.
Historical events are not so different. There are cases where investigative committees spend decades searching for the truth and still fail to reach a complete conclusion. Facts can often be reconstructed to some degree, but restoring people's intentions and inner motivations with perfect accuracy is another matter entirely. As time passes, debates gradually shift away from facts and toward interpretations. In the end, society often settles not on absolute truth, but on the explanation that appears most convincing given the available evidence.
There is another reason for this. Human beings exist within finite time. Individual lives are finite. Governments have limited terms. Even nations themselves are not eternal. No matter how much we wish to investigate every question thoroughly, reality does not wait. As a result, people must make decisions with incomplete information. At the beginning, we judge based on possibilities. At the end, we judge based on outcomes and records. This is one reason why our evaluations of the same person or event often change over time.
For this reason, societies frequently choose social consensus over complete truth. Not because every question has been answered, but because a particular explanation appears to be the most reasonable one available at the moment. Such conclusions are less like final answers and more like provisional agreements that allow people to move forward.
Artificial intelligence is no exception. Many people expect AI to provide objective truth. Yet AI is a system trained on records left behind by humans. Books, academic papers, news articles, debates, source code, and historical documents contain not only human wisdom but also human biases and limitations. The answers generated by AI are therefore not final truths. They are often the most plausible explanations that can be produced from the information accumulated so far. They are closer to hypotheses than answers, closer to drafts than finished works.
Perhaps reality itself resembles a vast laboratory. We are not beings who receive the final report. We live by reading interim reports. Scientists publish results along with margins of error. Investors place bets on uncertain futures. Entrepreneurs launch businesses with no guarantee of success. No one has ever possessed a perfect map, yet people continue to move forward using the most reliable map currently available.
The important point is that this is not a pessimistic story. Human civilization has never grown from complete certainty. Instead, it has advanced through judgment made under uncertainty, through correcting mistakes, and through accepting new evidence. Progress has never depended on knowing everything. It has depended on moving forward despite not knowing everything.
But why do humans go this far?
Other animals survive, compete, and cooperate. Yet humans do not stop there. We want to understand the hearts of others. We want to uncover historical truth. We want to know the origins of the universe. We investigate the mechanisms of life, study intelligence, and build artificial intelligence to analyze ourselves once again. The remarkable thing is that all of these pursuits eventually circle back to humanity itself. We study the universe and end up asking where we came from. We study AI and end up asking what intelligence and consciousness really are.
Perhaps humanity's most distinctive trait is not intelligence itself, but an inability to leave unanswered questions alone. We keep reaching toward questions that may never be fully resolved. Because of this tendency, we suffer more, feel lonelier, love more passionately, and become more obsessed. Yet it is this same tendency that gives rise to science, philosophy, art, and civilization itself.
Human history is not a straight path toward a final truth. It is closer to a process in which countless branches continue to grow outward. When one explanation gains social acceptance, new questions emerge from it. When one answer appears, new possibilities reveal themselves. We are not walking toward a completed conclusion. We are gradually expanding the boundaries of understanding.
Perhaps the entire human species is still writing a vast interim report. And that endless pursuit, while often the source of our greatest suffering, is also the force that has carried human civilization forward.
