Why Did Games Give Us Vehicles?

Humans have always had a special fascination with vehicles. Horses were never simply animals that saved us the effort of walking. They gave us the power to travel faster and farther than our own legs could carry us. Ships turned impassable seas into routes. Railways shortened the time between cities. Cars gave individuals the freedom to leave fixed routes and schedules behind and travel wherever they wanted. Airplanes freed us from the limits of the ground itself. That is why vehicles have always meant more to us than transportation. Horses evoke adventure and exploration, sports cars symbolize speed and success, motorcycles represent freedom, and airplanes and spacecraft embody our dreams of reaching the unknown.
Games embraced this fascination very early. What is interesting is that in early games, vehicles were not usually something a character used to get around. They were often the main character themselves. In racing games, the car was the player. In aerial shooters, the fighter plane became the player's body. In space shooters, a tiny spacecraft represented the human behind the controls. There was no real need to separate the driver from the machine. Driving the car was the game. Flying the plane was the game. In that sense, vehicles in early games were not transportation. They were the player's body and, in many cases, the game itself.
As game worlds grew larger and characters gained more freedom to explore them, however, the role of vehicles began to change. Players could now walk through a world on foot, then mount a horse, climb into a car, or board a ship when needed. Vehicles were no longer simply protagonists. They became tools that extended human abilities. They allowed players to cross long distances quickly, sail across waters that had once blocked their path, and fly over mountains and cliffs that had previously defined the limits of the world.
In role-playing and adventure games especially, vehicles became powerful rewards for progression. A player might begin the journey on foot, later acquire a horse, eventually gain access to a ship, and finally obtain something capable of flight. This was about more than moving faster. The moment you acquired a ship, the sea stopped being a wall. The moment you could fly, mountain ranges stopped being borders. Places that had once existed only in the distance suddenly became reachable. Vehicles became not only methods of transportation, but keys that unlocked the world.
Then games such as Grand Theft Auto pushed the idea of vehicles in another direction. Cars were no longer special tools selected only when starting a race. They simply existed as part of the city. You could be walking down the street, find a car, get in, drive away, crash it, use it to escape from the police, abandon it when it was damaged, and take another one. The boundary between the player and the vehicle could now open and close freely.
Something interesting happens because of this. The moment you enter a car in GTA, you temporarily enter a different kind of game. On foot, you may be playing an action game. Get into a car and it becomes a driving game. When the police begin chasing you, it becomes a pursuit game. Find a fast sports car and the entire city can suddenly feel like a racetrack. Climb into a helicopter and the experience starts resembling a flight game. Land, step out, pick up a weapon, and you return to an action game.
In a curious way, this is also a return to the earliest days of games in a new form. In old racing games, the car was the player, so there was no reason to distinguish between the human and the vehicle. Later games separated the character from the machine. Open-world games such as GTA then found a way to reconnect them whenever the player chose. The moment a character enters a vehicle, both the player's body and the rules of play change. The vehicle becomes a switch capable of activating an entirely different kind of gameplay without ever leaving the same world.
Vehicles can even change the relationships between players. In Halo, a vehicle such as the Warthog allows one player to drive while another operates the weapon. The driver reads the terrain and chooses the route, while the gunner watches for enemies and targets. A single vehicle creates different roles that cannot be fully realized alone. What appears to be transportation becomes a small tactical space for cooperation.
The horse in Red Dead Redemption 2 takes vehicles in a completely different direction. A horse is not simply a piece of equipment summoned whenever faster transportation is needed. You feed it, brush it, travel long distances with it, and gradually build a relationship. If a horse you have traveled with for a long time is injured or killed, the loss can feel surprisingly personal. In one game, a vehicle creates cooperation between players. In another, it creates an emotional bond between a player and another living being. Within the single idea of a "vehicle," games have created radically different relationships: weapon, transportation, possession, partner, and companion.
Reality is not so different. We do not treat vehicles merely as tools for reaching destinations. If efficiency were all that mattered, there would be little reason to admire sports cars and classic cars, ride motorcycles across long distances, or dream about yachts and camper vans. When people look at vehicles, they do not imagine only the machine and its specifications. They imagine themselves driving a sports car down an open road, taking a motorcycle into unfamiliar territory, or waking up somewhere new in a camper van. Perhaps what we desire is not simply the vehicle itself, but another kind of life that becomes possible when we have it.
Games compress this ancient desire into interactive experiences. At first, the vehicle itself was the game. Later, vehicles extended the abilities of characters and became keys that unlocked previously inaccessible worlds. In open-world games, they became switches capable of transforming gameplay in an instant. Sometimes they became shared spaces for cooperation, and sometimes companions capable of inspiring genuine attachment. Today, we collect cars and spacecraft, customize them, upgrade them, and use them to express our tastes. Vehicles have evolved from transportation into abilities, content, possessions, characters, and even parts of our identity.
Yet when we look at vehicles in both reality and games, we find a fascinating paradox.
Vehicles make distances shorter while making our world larger.
A car makes a distant city feel closer, yet increases the number of places we can reach. A ship makes the ocean feel smaller while opening the way to entirely new continents. An airplane makes the map seem smaller, yet frees us from the boundaries imposed by mountains, rivers, and roads.
That may be why acquiring a new vehicle in a game can be such a memorable moment. It is not simply because our movement speed has increased. For a brief moment inside a virtual world, we experience something similar to what humans must have felt when they first rode horses across vast plains, launched ships across unknown seas, or built machines capable of rising into the sky.
When a new vehicle appears before us, we rarely think first about its speed.
Instead, we ask a much older question.
If I can ride this, how far can I go now?
