인생에서 종종 마주치는 다단계, 명리학, 유사 종교
새벽 1시쯤 선릉역 상권의 분위기를 체감할 수 있는 용도로 선릉역 메인 먹자골목을 영상으로 담아보았습니다. 영상은 24시 식자재 마트인 강남 마트에서 시작해, 족발집 ‘신선생 족신’까지 이어집니다.
식자재 마트 건물 외벽에 ‘가리온’이라는 문구를 보니, 과거 약 25년 전 제가 일했던 인터넷 방송 업체가 떠오르네요. 당시 PC 통신 채팅방 모임을 통해 알게 된, 서울대 출신이라 주장하던 지인이 있었습니다. 그는 어떤 회사 대표의 자녀 과외를 계기로 인연을 만든 후, 그 회사를 가로채 인터넷 방송 회사를 만들었다는 사실을 나중에서야 알게 되었죠. 그때 사회가 얼마나 냉정하고 치열한 정글인지 실감할 수 있었습니다.
그 회사는 선릉 바로 인근에 있었고, 구성원 중에는 제비족 출신도 있었습니다. 부유층 여성들을 즐겁게 해주는 역할을 하며, 늘 부자집 여인들에게 후원을 받고 살던 인물이었는데, 회사가 잠깐 어려웠을 때 금전적으로 조금이나마 도움을 준 인물로 기억합니다. 한 번은 그의 호출로 그녀들의 부자집에 방문했던 기억도 어렴풋이 남아 있습니다.
선릉역은 다단계나 네트워크 마케팅 관련 비즈니스가 활발한 곳입니다. 가리온 이후에도 ‘씨소스월드’라는 회사와 관련해 일을 한 경험이 있는데, 그 회사 역시 인터넷 방송을 다단계 방식으로 운영했죠. 당시 저는 기술 개발 이외에는 다른 것에는 큰 관심이 없었는데, 그 회사 인터넷 방송 대규모 사업 설명회에서 기술 관련 발표를 맡은 적이 있습니다.
인생을 살다 보면 다양한 사람과 사기꾼을 만나게 되고, 때로는 다단계 일을 하는 사람들과도 마주치게 됩니다. 이런 일들은 조심한다고 피할 수 있는 것이 아니기 때문에, 스스로 기준을 세우고 인생을 돌파해나가는 것이 중요합니다. 이런 일들로 간혹 시련을 겪고 주저앉기도 하지만, 시간이 약이 되어 결국 다시 훌훌 털고 일어나게 되기도 하죠.
최근에도 우연히 알게 된 한 인물이 자신이 보기에 이만큼 보상 플랜이 좋은 다단계 사업은 없다며 자신의 소속으로 참여할 것을 적극 추천했지만, 저는 조직 관리 같은 것에는 관심이 없다는 논리로 완곡한 방식으로 거절했습니다. 그리고 어떤 당근 모임에서는 대순진리회 소속 모임장을 만나 명리학 상담을 권유받았지만, 저는 종교에 별다른 관심이 없고, 나의 철학적 삶의 방식은 끊임없는 내면 성찰을 중요하게 생각하는 것이라고 설명하니 몇 차례 더 권유한 후 포기하더군요.
저는 다단계든, 명리학이든, 유사 종교든 한 번쯤 관심을 가져보는 것은 이해할 수 있다고 봅니다. 그러나 주관 없이 맹목적으로 믿는 것은 큰 위험을 부른다고 보고 있습니다. 인생에서 이런 인연은 흔하게 마주치므로, 끊임없는 자기 성찰과 객관적 사고가 필요하다고 생각합니다.
Facing MLMs, Astrology, and Pseudo-Religions in Everyday Life
I recorded a video of the main dining alley near Seolleung Station around 1 a.m. to capture the atmosphere of the area at that hour. The video starts at the 24-hour grocery store, Gangnam Mart, and continues all the way to the jokbal restaurant, ‘Shinseonsaeng Jokshin.’
Seeing the word ‘Garion’ on the exterior wall of the grocery store brought back memories of an internet broadcasting company I worked for about 25 years ago. At the time, I knew a person through a PC communication chatroom who claimed to be a Seoul National University graduate. I later learned that he had used a tutoring connection with a company representative’s child to establish a relationship, then took over the company and started an internet broadcasting business. That experience made me realize just how harsh and cutthroat society could be.
The company was located right near Seolleung, and some of its members were from the so-called “swallow tribe.” One member, who always received support from wealthy women, played the role of entertaining affluent female clients. I remember that when the company faced temporary difficulties, he provided some financial help. I also vaguely recall being called to visit one of these wealthy households at his request.
Seolleung Station is known for being a hub of multi-level marketing and network marketing activities. After Garion, I also had some experience with a company called ‘C-Source World,’ which similarly ran internet broadcasting in a multi-level marketing format. At that time, I was mainly focused on technology development and had little interest in other aspects, though I did give a technology-related presentation at one of the company’s large-scale business briefings.
In life, we inevitably encounter a variety of people, including con artists, and sometimes people involved in multi-level marketing. Such situations cannot always be avoided, so it’s important to establish your own standards and navigate life with them. Occasionally, these experiences bring trials and setbacks, but time heals, and we eventually shake them off and move forward.
Recently, someone I met by chance enthusiastically recommended that I join what he considered one of the best multi-level marketing plans, but I politely declined, explaining that I had no interest in organizational management. In another case, I met the leader of a Daesoon Jinrihoe-affiliated group on a local app, who offered to give me a fortune-telling reading. I explained that I have little interest in religion and that my personal philosophy emphasizes continual self-reflection. After several attempts, he eventually gave up.
I believe it is understandable to explore multi-level marketing, astrology, or other pseudo-religious systems at least once. However, blindly believing in them without personal judgment can lead to serious risks. Such encounters are common in life, so constant self-reflection and objective thinking are essential.
