A Society That Refuses to Apologize, and a Public That Refuses to Forgive — How Far Are We Willing to Allow Reflection and Change?

Most people find it difficult to admit their own faults or mistakes. Instead, they choose to defend themselves, or sometimes even to strike back. Even when they apologize, the apology is often not directed at those directly affected, but rather thrown toward public criticism in a perfunctory manner. Instead of apologizing for the wrongdoing itself, they hide behind phrases like, “I’m sorry if there was any misunderstanding,” avoiding real responsibility and focusing only on getting through the immediate crisis. At times, even a “sincere apology” becomes something carefully staged.

This is why genuinely acknowledging one’s mistakes and offering a heartfelt apology is so rare. The more power, wealth, or status a person has, the less they tend to feel the need to apologize—and the more likely they are to believe that merely imitating an apology is sufficient. As a result, when we do encounter a truly sincere apology, it feels unfamiliar, even unsettling.

Even if someone committed a serious wrongdoing in the past, if they have faced appropriate legal consequences, openly acknowledged their fault, and sincerely apologized, we must consider the principle of hating the sin but forgiving the person. Everyone makes mistakes, big or small. But choosing to confront one’s wrongdoing, apologize, and genuinely change requires extraordinary courage and effort. When someone has truly done so, we should at least allow ourselves to consider forgiveness.

When such rational forgiveness accumulates, society has a chance to become a brighter and healthier place. Conversely, in a society where forgiveness is impossible, a culture of reflection and apology can never take root. Words like rehabilitation or redemption would exist only as myths, not realities.

Rather than consuming the excessive attention surrounding actor Jo Jin-woong as mere gossip, this moment should prompt us to reflect on how our society understands and deals with reflection, apology, and forgiveness.
