Why Monopolies Stop Innovating: How Lobbying, Revolving Doors, and Cartels Kill Competition — and Why AI Will Flip the Board
What the SK incident and the Coupang controversy reveal is not merely a question of corporate ethics.
They expose how companies in monopolistic positions “solve” problems once competition disappears, and just as importantly, what they deliberately choose not to do.
When a company or an entrenched elite secures a dominant position, it no longer prioritizes relentless innovation. Instead, it redirects its resources toward lobbying, regulatory capture, and institutional influence. Victory is no longer achieved through better technology or service, but by preventing competition from emerging in the first place. In this structure, consumers, sellers, and workers are reduced from stakeholders to cost variables—and eventually, to entities treated as disposable.
Recent media coverage makes it clear that this mindset is not an anomaly but a deeply embedded structural reality. The revolving door of former officials, reinforced cartels of interests, and systems designed to diffuse accountability are not accidents. They are deliberate, repeatable choices.
Coupang is often framed as a “high-tech company,” but at its core, it is a logistics and platform operator. The technologies required in this domain have largely become commoditized, and there is no shortage of organizations capable of building systems at a comparable level. The real reason viable alternatives have struggled to emerge is not a lack of technical capability, but the fact that attempts at innovation have been suppressed through institutional pressure, lobbying, and aggressive talent poaching.
That landscape, however, is changing.
The arrival of the AI era fundamentally undermines the assumption that only massive capital and scale can build and operate platforms. Today, even small, focused teams can design and manage systems of significant complexity. I am confident that I could design such a framework myself—and there are countless people far more capable and insightful than I am.
So the question must be asked:
Why do consumers, sellers, and workers still lack meaningful alternatives?
At this point, it is no longer a question of feasibility, but of who will move first.
Monopolies are not permanent.
When competition disappears, decline follows—not because of technological limits, but because of complacency.
The time has come to prove the alternative—not with rhetoric, but with execution.
