Faker
Do Not Forbid Choice — Enable Responsibility
The witch-hunting of games must come to an end.
Focusing intensely on a single pursuit—setting everything else aside—can be dangerous, or it can be an opportunity.
The issue is not whether it is a game or not, but what kind of structure that immersion exists within.
Choice always belongs to the individual.
The moment someone tries to block that choice from the outside, the result is not resolution but conflict.
Control is not an alternative, and prohibition does not remove responsibility.
Of course, judgment and decision-making can become blurred.
People cannot always make good choices, and sometimes they clearly make bad ones.
But a “good choice” does not have an absolute standard to begin with.
In most cases, that standard can only be understood through lived experience.
That is why what we need is not to eliminate choice,
but to propose environments that enable people to bear the consequences of their choices.
After hearing about Faker’s success in the news,
someone’s mother lifted the ban on gaming.
Not because games suddenly became safe,
but because she saw a structure in which gaming could be connected to reality.
This is not an isolated case.
Lee Sedol was deeply serious about baduk, a game often labeled as a “classical” one.
That seriousness led to relentless study, repetition, and responsible immersion—
and ultimately, he made history.
Their fields were different, but their attitudes were the same.
They did not use immersion as an escape,
nor did they confine play to a world detached from reality.
They built a structure in which immersion expanded into responsibility.
So the question should not be,
“Is this game dangerous?”
but rather,
“Is there an environment that allows this choice to be responsibly sustained?”
If you want to play the game you love without restraint,
first create an environment that makes that possible.
That environment will likely involve having a profession.
Some will agree.
Others will not.
There is no single correct answer in the world.
The answer is something only each individual can know for themselves.
The best we can do
is not to impose answers,
but to leave behind the materials for thought
and the range of choices that allow each person
to arrive at their own answer.
Do not forbid choice.
Enable responsibility.
