Will you contribute to a service built by others, or build a service that carries your own will?

Spending time building someone else’s service is often taken for granted, but sometimes it is worth asking a simple question: what if that same time were invested in building your own service instead? After more than twenty-five years working in IT and over a decade in game development, I have experienced countless moments of effort, exhaustion, and persistence. I have worked in traditional jobs and also participated in projects that were close to entrepreneurship. Yet when the fruits finally appear, the outcome is usually recorded under the name of the CEO, and the achievement becomes the CEO’s accomplishment.

To some extent, this structure is understandable. A business ultimately moves forward because someone takes responsibility and carries it to the end, and that person is usually the representative leader. The same person also bears the burden when things fail. In reality, most businesses eventually end in closure, which makes the concentration of recognition and responsibility somewhat rational from a structural point of view.

Of course, a business can be built alone, but in practice the most meaningful results often emerge when people resonate with each other and create synergy. Collaboration can reduce exhaustion and produce outcomes that are difficult to achieve individually. Yet human beings are also quick to change when interests and power dynamics enter the picture. When significant success arrives, people naturally become more focused on protecting their position and preserving their newly formed advantages. In that moment, it becomes harder to look back at the people who once struggled alongside them.

Part of this tension comes from the fact that human relationships themselves are structurally complex. As organizations grow and interests intertwine, someone inevitably has to hold responsibility and authority to guide the direction of the group. Leadership and decision-making structures become necessary. The difficulty arises when, over time, the efforts and contributions of many people slowly fade from view while the structure itself remains.

For this reason, if someone wants their achievements to be recognized more directly, it may be worth considering stepping away from building other people’s services and instead focusing on creating something of their own. This does not mean that everyone must follow the same path, but it is at least worth asking where one’s time and energy are truly being invested.

However, such a decision should never be driven by emotional reaction or momentary frustration. Feeling disappointed in an organization or sensing unfairness is not enough reason to suddenly pursue independence. The decision to build one’s own service must stand on rational judgment. The real question is not whether one lacks technology or capital. A more important question is whether one can sustain both patience and innovation at the same time. It requires the ability to experiment with new ideas while also maintaining and stabilizing what has already been built.

Perhaps true results emerge from the balance between progressive thinking and conservative thinking. Innovation without stability quickly collapses, while stability without innovation eventually stagnates. Being able to see both perspectives at once is what allows a long journey like entrepreneurship to continue without losing direction.

The era we live in today is also different from the past. Saying “I cannot start because I lack technology” or “I cannot start because I lack money” carries far less weight than it once did. Tools have already entered a stage of democratization. Advanced AI tools, cloud infrastructure, and efficient development environments have dramatically lowered many barriers. If someone continues to repeat those reasons, the problem may not be about resources at all but rather about will. Or perhaps, deep inside, they have already decided that the path they are currently walking is the one they intend to stay on.

This is not an attempt to declare which way of life is correct. Some people find meaning and fulfillment within organizations, contributing to a shared mission. Others feel more aligned with building their own path and creating systems of their own. The only hope is that one’s determination is not easily broken by temporary emotions, atmosphere, or surrounding circumstances.

This writing is not meant to impose a conclusion. It is simply a small attempt to plant a seed of thought, encouraging someone to pause and consider where their time is going—and where they truly want it to go.
