From Asking What's Possible to Simply Starting
On weekends, some people build a small flower bed. Others craft wooden shelves, sand down old chairs to give them new life, bake homemade pizza, or customize an old motorcycle or car in their own style. It is not always about saving money. More often, it is the simple joy of creating something with your own hands and the satisfaction of seeing it completed.
The challenge, however, has never been starting—it has been finishing. A single screw that doesn't fit can bring an entire project to a halt. Choosing the wrong type of wood may mean starting over from scratch. A simple wiring problem can end with calling a professional. Even after countless searches and hours spent watching YouTube videos, it is often difficult to find someone facing exactly the same situation. As a result, many projects end up pushed into the corner of a garage or workshop, accompanied only by the familiar thought: "I'll finish it someday."
This is exactly where AI is changing the game. Show it a photo, and it can identify a part, explain what to check next, or walk you through the process step by step. If you get stuck halfway through, you simply ask another question. If something goes wrong, it helps you figure out why. AI does not build the shelf or landscape your garden for you, but it feels like having an experienced assistant standing beside you—someone patient enough to answer every question and keep the project moving forward.
Nassim Nicholas Taleb recently made an interesting observation. He argued that AI is not replacing skilled tradespeople; instead, it is encouraging people to try solving problems themselves before calling one. The desire for self-reliance has always existed. When repairs are expensive, appointments take too long, or curiosity takes over, people naturally want to fix things themselves. AI has simply lowered the barrier between wanting to try and actually doing it.
This shift extends far beyond DIY projects. Replace wood and screws with code and screens, and the pattern remains exactly the same. Building a web application, developing a game, editing videos, or automating everyday tasks all follow a similar path. In the past, ideas began with planning documents. We created PowerPoint presentations, wireframes, and detailed proposals, hoping others could imagine something that did not yet exist.
Today, we build first. Even if the product is incomplete, we can demonstrate a working prototype, a playable demo, or a short video showing the core experience. The result speaks louder than the proposal. We are moving from an era of persuading people with ideas to one of convincing them with working products.
As a result, individuals can now take on projects that once seemed out of reach. Large-scale services and fields such as healthcare or finance still require rigorous design, testing, and reliability. But for most ideas, building something first is now the faster and smarter approach. The moment you create a working version, opportunities and problems that were invisible during planning suddenly become obvious. AI is not replacing human judgment—it is making experimentation dramatically faster.
What is fascinating is what happens next. Once people begin building, they rarely stop. One wooden shelf leads to redesigning an entire workspace. A small garden project grows into landscaping the whole yard. A simple game prototype inspires entirely new mechanics. A small web app becomes the foundation for something much larger. We do not discover our limits before we begin; we discover them by building, and every finished project expands what we believe is possible. The more we create, the deeper we want to explore and the farther we want to go.
Perhaps this is AI's greatest impact. It is not replacing people. It is turning "Maybe I'll try someday" into "Let's build it today." It helps ideas survive the difficult middle, where most projects once stalled. Work that was previously outsourced or abandoned is increasingly becoming something we attempt ourselves.
Those small attempts accumulate. A hobby becomes a project. A project becomes a business. And sometimes, it grows into something much bigger than anyone expected. Great innovations do not always begin inside famous laboratories or large corporations. More often, they begin after work, in a garage, a small workshop, a home office, or in front of a computer—where someone simply decides to give an idea a chance.
